Saltless Water Treatment

Traditional water softeners, which are often large, bulky units, work by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium. These methods lead to increased salt concentrations, which are then carried into drinking water and into the environment. Homeowners of non-salt-using systems repeat a significant health benefit through the elimination of the sodium ingested from a traditional treatment system.

Can you imagine a water treatment system that doesn’t require salt, doesn't take up much room, and in some cases doesn't even require electricity? Let me introduce you to a couple of alternative approaches that are gaining acceptance, especially in areas where salt-using softening systems are being restricted or outlawed due to the negative effects of system discharge on the environment.

Magnetic Water Treatment: Although this idea may sound new, magnetic treatment of water has been used in other countries for decades. As a matter of fact, thousands of households in the U.S. are using this approach today. The magnets offered by GMX, pictured to the right, were originally developed by the U.S. government for NASA's space program.

These high-tech, lightweight, compact magnets pack thousands of gauss of magnetic pull into a small space. They work by altering magnesium and calcium ions so that they won't bond together, which allows the water to "behave" as if it is soft, without the necessity of a salt-based softener. While this basic technology has been used for many years in industrial applications, these compact new magnets make it practical to offer the advantages of magnetic fluid conditioning for private residences. Benefits of magnetic water treatment include:

  • Elimination of scale buildup in pipes, an energy-draining problem. As pipe buildup increases, water flow decreases and appliances, such as a hot water heater, have to work harder. As homeowners, we have to work harder too, because the white residue from the scale adds to our daily cleaning and reduces the life of appliances and plumbing fixtures.
  • When additional units are installed for swimming pool equipment, elimination or extreme reduction of scale buildup in the pool.
  • Lower cost than a traditional water treatment system.
  • A 90-day, money-back guarantee and lifetime warranty offered with GMX systems.

As an added benefit, GMX magnets don't wear out or require outside power. In fact, over a normal human life span, they lose only an insignificant amount of their original strength.

Secondary filtration is part of many water treatment systems and may be needed along with the GMX units. Although GMX has had success in situations where sulfur and iron levels are not all that high, extremely high iron or sulfur content will need to be addressed with special whole-house filters. Bacteria and high chlorine levels will also need to be handled through proper filtration.

Radio Frequency is another form of saltless water treatment. The Patriot Water Purification Company states that this type of system is 2800 times more powerful than a standard magnetic system. Their Liberty Water Purification System uses ultrasonic waves to produce magnetic fields that purify water. Through oxidation and hydrogenation, the system is designed to reduce or remove iron and sulfates, and it will get rid of chlorine, fluoride, and hydrogen sulfide odors.

According to the company, those ugly orange stains on your home, fence, and driveway caused by iron in the irrigation water can be avoided through the use of their system. The small, weather-resistant box pictured above is the only addition to your well, as opposed to the larger and more traditional iron filtration tanks.  If your well water tests positive for iron, take action to remove this mineral before your new home falls prey to difficult-to-remove, defacing orange stains.

Patriot Water offers a 5-year warranty and a 30-day, money-back guarantee. Visit www.patrioth20.com for more information

Multiple Stage Filtration: If the above two systems are a little too “out there” for you, there are other more traditional, but still saltless, systems on the market, including the GE Homespring. This system, which uses a two-stage filtration system, can treat municipal water, untreated well water, and lake water sources. According to GE, the Homespring is the first point-of-use water filtration system certified as a “microbiological water purifier” by the Water Quality Association (WQA). It needs electricity only for the timer that triggers the back flush (which cleans the filter periodically). For more information, visit www.homespring.com

Tracy DeCarlo owner of Detailed Solutions, Inc., has more than twelve years' experience in the residential construction industry. As a Home Building Selection Coach, Tracy helps homeowners incorporate function, efficiency, and organization into new-home designs or remodeling projects. By working with homeowners to focus on their daily habits and preferences, Tracy helps create living spaces that support and complement their owners’ lifestyles. In 2003, Tracy and her husband moved into their new, 5000-square-foot, custom-built home. By applying many of the tips outlined in her book, their building project finished at less than 1 percent over budget and included only one change order!

Tracy also offers products to help organize the laundry room, including her exclusive laundry sorter.  After noticing that the laundry rooms in so many homes of all price ranges were small and non-functional, she designed a wall-hung laundry sorter that will sort four loads of laundry in just 24” of wall space.  Learn more now at Sort N Neat Product Page.
